This article describes the procedure for downloading and installing version 3.4.62.295 of the Bridgemate Pro server USB-serial converter for 64-bit versions of Windows 10. You can use this driver as a replacement for your current driver should you experience problems using the Bridgemate Pro server on computers running Windows 10.

Thanks to the great folks over at Aceeca.com (makers of NEW PalmOS Garnet devices), USB drivers for 64bit Vista, Windows 7, and Win 8 operating systems are available. There are many users reporting Palm Desktop 4.x is also working. I have synced my TX to my Vista64 bit laptop, and Windows 8.1 HP. The Linux Kernel contains both generic USB interface drivers and higher level USB device drivers for some devices like USB mice or USB thumb drivers. The generic interface drivers can be used from user space applications to connect to USB devices not specifically supported by the kernel itself.

Introduction

.Device must be using Android 4.4 or higher and support USB host mode. A USB OTG (“On the Go”) cable is required to connect OBDLink EX (not included with purchase). Before purchasing EX for use with an Android, make sure phone or tablet meets these requirements. In File Explorer, select a USB drive and go to the ‘Manage’ tab. Click the ‘Eject’ button to safely remove a drive. From the system tray, right-click the USB device icon and select the Eject option for the drive you want to remove. If all goes well, Windows will tell you it’s safe to remove a USB drive within seconds. Once you have assigned a user to the USB device you will need to edit the “ /etc/pam.d/gdm ” configuration file to enable the pamusb module. The directives that you need to add to the “gdm” configuration file are shown in Figure 2.2.

Version 3.4.62.295 of the Aten USB-serial converter driver has been successfully tested on 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 10.

Note:

Only install this driver when you connect the Bridgemate Pro server to a USB port using the “Aten USB-serial converter” which is supplied with the Bridgemate Pro server. If the Bridgemate Pro server uses a direct serial connection port or another brand of USB-serial converter, do not use this driver.

This driver only works with the new chipset type of Aten UC232A USB-serial converters supplied after 2012. These new converters can be recognised by the third character of the serial number, which is printed on the label on the back of the converter. This serial number starts with 'Z3' or 'Z8'. If the following character is a letter, the converter is the new type and can be used together with this driver. If the character is a digit, the converter is the old type and this converter cannot be used with 64-bit versions of Windows 10. This old type of converter can still be used with previous versions of Microsoft Windows, together with the 32/64-bit drivers for those versions.

Procedure

If a driver is already installed, you should uninstall the current driver first.

How to uninstall the current driver:

1. Make sure the Aten USB to Serial converter is connected to one of the USB ports on your computer.
2. Click on the Windows key and the X key on your keyboard simultaneously to open the Quick Links menu.
3. Click on 'Device Manager'.
4. Double-click on 'Ports (COM & LPT)'.
5. Right-click on 'USB to serial bridge' (the name may be slightly different depending on the current driver version), then click 'Uninstall'.
6. If the option 'Delete the driver software for this device' is displayed, select it, then click OK to confirm you want to uninstall the driver.
7. The driver will now be un-installed.
8. Remove the USB converter from the USB port.

How to install the 64-bit driver:

1. Make sure the Aten USB to Serial converter is NOT connected to the computer.
2. Download the file: UC232A_Windows_Setup_V1.0.081.exe
3. Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. The driver will now be installed.
4. After the installation has completed, connect the USB to Serial converter to a USB port on your computer. The converter will automatically be recognised and is ready to use. You can now connect your Bridgemate Pro server via the converter.

Employees are aware of the risks associated with inadequate USB drive security – yet their employers aren’t mandating following best practices, according to a report by Apricorn.

“The State of USB Data Protection 2019: Employee Spotlight” survey report, which polled nearly 300 employees across industries including education, finance, government, healthcare, legal, retail, manufacturing, and power and energy, examined year-over-year trends of USB drive usage, policies and business drivers.

The report reveals that while employees have been the main driving factor behind the use of USB drives in the workplace (according to 68 percent of respondents), employees have also been placing their organizations at significant risk. For example:

• While 91 percent of respondents claimed that encrypted USB drives should be mandatory, a full 58 percent of respondents confirmed that they regularly use non-encrypted USB drives
• Meanwhile, although 64 percent of organizations have a policy outlining acceptable use of USB devices, 64 percent of respondents said their employees use USB drives without obtaining advance permission to do so
• Furthermore, in yet another example of employees discarding best practices and policies, nearly half of employees lost a USB drive without notifying appropriate authorities about the incident

Beyond these unfavorable findings, one of the most alarming statistics was the fact that employees are taking more security shortcuts than ever before. By comparing the key results of this survey against Apricorn’s previous USB data protection report, several troubling trends emerge, including:

• A higher percentage of employees are using USB drives without obtaining advance permission to do so: 64 percent in 2018, compared to 57 percent in 2017
• There has been an increase in the percentage of employees that aren’t notifying appropriate authorities after losing a USB drive: 48 percent in 2018 versus 39 percent in 2017
• In another example of employees unknowingly putting their organizations at risk, there was an uptick in the proportion of employees that use non-encrypted USB drives, such as those received “free” at conferences: 58 percent in 2018, compared to 56 percent in 2017

One encouraging note that indicates a positive trend: there was a 24 percent drop in the number of organizations regularly using non-encrypted USB devices (58 percent in 2018, compared to 82 percent in 2017). It is crucial that this percentage continues to drop, considering that the Ponemon Institute estimated that the average total cost of a data breach increased by six percent between 2017 and 2018, to $3.86 million per breach.
